Food Suggestions
Do not bring any food items that require refregiration!
Snacks (essential when taking a break in hiking)
  • Crackers or cookies
  • Gorp (you can easily make your own trail mix: e.g. cashews, peanuts, raisins, and M&Ms)
  • Pistachios
  • Energy bar
  • Dried fruit
  • Peanut butter (or Nutella) and crackers
Drinks Top
  • Instant coffee
  • Hot chocolate
  • Hot apple cider
  • Electrolyte drinks
  • Crystal lite
  • Water (filtered)
  • Orange smoothie: prepare at home and store in a Ziplock bag
    • 1 tsp. orange flavored drink mix
    • 1 tsp. dry milk
    • 2 tsp. instant vanilla pudding mix
    • At camp: pour mix in 16 oz. container, add cod water to taste, and stir.
Breakfast Top
  • Oatmeal, fresh or instant with:
    • Banana chips
    • Brown sugar
    • Butter
    • Raisins or other dried fruits
    • Walnut pieces
  • Burritos: prepare at home and store in Ziplock bags (mix together only dry ingredients)
    • Sliced mushrooms
    • Eggs (fresh or instant)
    • Cheese, red peppers, sliced mushrooms, salsa...
    • At camp: cook peppers and mushrooms until tender; stir eggs till done; add cheese; spoon into your tortilla and add salsa to taste.
Lunch Top
  • Crackers
  • Bagels
  • Cheese
  • Summer sausage
  • Fresh fruit
  • Dried fruit
  • Instant Soups (if you are already at camp)
  • Peanut butter
  • Protein Bars (make sure they are high protein)
Dinner Top
  • Casserole
    • Ramen Noodles
    • Choice of pre-cooked meat, tuna, crab, salmon, or chicken
    • Cheese (Cheddar/Pepper Jack/your favorite)
    • French fried onions, sweet peas, amybe broccoli
  • Cashew Rice Curry
    • 1/4 cup dried milk
    • 1/4 cup cashew pieces
    • 2 cups instant rice
    • 3 1/2 cups water
    • 1/2 tsp. salt
    • 1 tsp. curry powder
    • 2 oz. grated cheddar
    • Mix dry milk and water to form a paste.
    • Add remaining water, mix and bring to boil.
    • Stir in rice.
    • Cover & simmer till water is absorbed & rice is soft (approximately 20 minutes)
    • Stir in nuts & cheese.
    • Serve when
    • 2 oz. grated cheddar cheese is melted.

  • Cookies

Other Top
  • Try different soups and breads.
  • You can use freeze-dried meals, but they tend to be more expensive. "Mountain House," "Backpackers Pantry," and "Natural High" are some brands that have been enjoyed.
  • Fishing? Bring foil, butter and lemon seasoning.
